I'm trying to move on from photographing just local free shows, what's the best way to ask about getting a photo pass or permission to shoot a small (probably club sized) gig? As in asking promoters, venues or bands themselves?

A

When I first started it was a local easier to contact bands directly (via myspace) and ask them for photo passes to shows, nowadays its not so easy and theres a lot of photographers asking bands to shoot their shows. I think the best thing to do is contact fan sites, websites, small magazines and ask if you could possibly shoot shows for them. I first started out doing that for a local website. A bands PR folk are more likely to give a photopass to someone if it will get exposure/a review for their band and if you cant find a small website/mag to shoot for…why not start one yourself? I know a few friends whove done that
